addiction

Drug and substance use can cause problems at work, home, school, and in relationships, leaving you feeling isolated, helpless, or ashamed. People experiment with drugs for many different reasons.

Many first try drugs out of curiosity, to have a good time, because friends are doing it, or in an effort to improve athletic performance or ease another problem, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. No matter how often or how little you’re consuming, if your drug use is causing problems in your life—at work, school, home, or in your relationships—you likely have a drug abuse or addiction problem.

suboxone

Suboxone (Buprenorphine) provide a new means to treat opioid addiction in the United States since its FDA approval in 2002.  Buprenorphine’s usefulness stems from its unique pharmacological and safety profile, which encourages treatment adherence, and reduces the possibilities for both abuse and overdose.

Suboxone is listed as a Schedule III controlled drug by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It is considered to have less risk of causing dependence than Schedule II drugs such as methadone, morphine, and oxycodone. Suboxone is the first medications available for the treatment of opioid dependence that can be prescribed in a doctor’s office by specially trained and licensed physicians.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Opioid-addicted patients who continued to take Suboxone for 12 weeks were less likely to use opioids, cocaine and marijuana, to inject drugs, or drop out of treatment than those who received short-term detoxification and counseling.

How it works
When opiates are taken into the body, dopamine is released which produces a feeling of pleasure and euphoria. As the drugs wear off, the receptors which received the opiates are left empty, causing withdrawal symptoms to begin. The buprenorphine in Suboxone attaches to the empty receptors and stops them from feeling the pangs of craving and withdrawal. It is a partial opioid agonist, which means it completely halts withdrawal without producing the euphoria and unconsciousness.
